# eSIM for Vienna

For a Vienna trip, an Austria eSIM covers the city and day trips within Austria. A typical visit lasts around four days, so pick a plan that lasts at least that long. Install it at home before flying, then turn it on after you land at Vienna International Airport.

Plans for Austria cover the whole country, including Vienna.

## Arriving in Vienna
Vienna International Airport is in Schwechat, southeast of the city. ÖBB Railjet trains run from the airport station to Wien Hauptbahnhof, the main station, and the S7 suburban line also stops there. Works on the city's central S-Bahn line until about the end of October 2027 change some routes, and during that time the City Airport Train is replaced by buses to Wien Mitte, so check the timetable before you travel. Vienna Airport Bus lines also link the terminals to several parts of the city. Long-distance trains from Salzburg, Graz, Munich, Budapest and Prague arrive at Hauptbahnhof.

Having data when you land means you can check the next train in the ÖBB app, pull up your hotel address and message your host while you wait for bags. Install the eSIM at home on Wi-Fi by scanning the QR code, then leave it unused until the trip. At the airport, switch the eSIM line on, turn on data roaming for it, and keep your home line's data off.

## Getting around
Vienna's public transport is run by Wiener Linien: the U-Bahn (lines U1 to U6), trams and buses. Its official app, WienMobil, plans journeys and sells tickets, and tickets are also sold at machines and in tobacco shops. The tram ring around the old town is a simple way to see the main sights from one line.

For a car ride you can book on your phone, Uber and Bolt operate in Vienna alongside regular taxis. Rental bikes are common in the city, and the flat streets around the Danube Canal and the Prater suit cycling. Download an offline map in case you want to save battery between museum visits.

## Where you'll use data
Visitors tend to spend time in the Innere Stadt (St. Stephen's Cathedral, the Hofburg, the opera house), around the Ringstrasse, in the MuseumsQuartier, at Schoenbrunn Palace, and at the Belvedere. The Naschmarkt and the cafes in the 7th district are popular for meals, and the Prater with its Ferris wheel is a common evening stop. Concert tickets, palace entries and coffee house tables are often booked online, so confirmations on your phone are useful.

Day trips inside Austria stay on your plan: the Wachau valley with Melk Abbey and Krems, the spa town of Baden, or Salzburg by train. Bratislava is a short train or boat ride from Vienna, but it is in Slovakia, and an Austria plan does not cover it there. The same goes for Budapest in Hungary. A Europe plan can cover several countries, but check its country list on our Europe page, since regional plans can leave countries out.

## Common questions

### Will the eSIM work as soon as I land in Vienna?
Yes, if you installed it before the flight. Switch the eSIM line on, turn on data roaming for it, and it connects once you are off the plane. If it does not, turn airplane mode on and off once.

### How much data do I need for four days in Vienna?
About 2.5 GB for normal use: maps, the transit apps, messages, photos and social media. Lots of video calls or streaming push it towards 6 GB. The plan list on this page shows the estimate beside each plan.

### Can I buy a Vienna transit ticket on my phone?
Yes. The WienMobil app sells tickets for the U-Bahn, trams and buses. Machines at stations are the other option. Check the Wiener Linien site for the ticket that fits your length of stay.

### Does a Vienna eSIM give me an Austrian phone number?
No. These plans are data only. Calls and messages work through apps such as WhatsApp or FaceTime. If your bank sends codes by SMS, keep your home line on for texts with its data switched off.

### Does the plan work on a day trip to Bratislava?
No. Bratislava is in Slovakia, and an Austria plan covers Austria only. A Europe plan may cover Slovakia, so check its country list on our Europe page before you buy. Trips to Melk, Krems or Baden stay inside Austria.
