# eSIM for Luxembourg City

For Luxembourg City, a Luxembourg eSIM covers the capital and the rest of the Grand Duchy. Most visits last about two days, so a small plan can be enough. Install it at home before you travel, then switch it on after you land at Luxembourg Airport or arrive by train.

Plans for Luxembourg cover the whole country, including Luxembourg City.

## Arriving in Luxembourg City
Luxembourg Airport sits at Findel, a few kilometres east of the centre. Since 2025 the tram has run from the airport through the Kirchberg district, where the European institutions are, to the central station, and buses also serve the terminal. The central station, Luxembourg Gare, is where trains from Brussels, Paris, Metz and Trier arrive, and the city's main bus and tram stops are nearby.

Data on arrival lets you check which bus to take, confirm the platform and pull up your hotel address. Install the eSIM at home on Wi-Fi with its QR code before you leave. When you arrive, switch the eSIM line on, turn on data roaming for it, and keep your home line's data off.

## Getting around
Public transport across Luxembourg, including trains, trams and buses, has been free for passengers since 2020, with first-class train seats the exception. The official mobiliteit.lu site and app plan journeys and show live departures. The tram connects the airport, Kirchberg, the city centre and the station, and a funicular links the Pfaffenthal valley to the Kirchberg plateau.

The old town and the Grund quarter are easiest to explore on foot, so a downloaded offline map is useful for the steep paths between the upper and lower town. Rental bikes are available through the Velo'h scheme. Taxis can be booked by phone, and we could not confirm which ride apps operate here, so check before you rely on one.

## Where you'll use data
Visitors spend most of their time in the Ville Haute around the Grand Ducal Palace and Place Guillaume II, along the Chemin de la Corniche, in the Grund, and on the Bock promontory with its casemates. Museums such as the MUDAM in Kirchberg and the Villa Vauban are worth the walk, and many sights sell timed tickets online.

Day trips inside Luxembourg stay on your plan: Vianden with its castle, Echternach and the Mullerthal hiking trails, and the Moselle wine villages. Trier in Germany and Metz in France are both a short train ride away, but they are different countries, and a Luxembourg plan does not cover them. A Europe plan can cover several countries, but check its country list on our Europe page, since regional plans can leave countries out.

## Common questions

### Will the eSIM work as soon as I land at Luxembourg Airport?
Yes, if you installed it before the flight. Switch the eSIM line on, turn on data roaming for it, and it connects once you are off the plane. If it does not, turn airplane mode on and off once.

### How much data do I need for two days in Luxembourg City?
About 1.5 GB for normal use: maps, the transit app, messages and photos. Lots of video calls or streaming push it towards 3 GB. The plan list on this page shows the estimate beside each plan.

### Do I need to buy a ticket for buses and trams in the city?
Public transport in Luxembourg is free for most passengers, so you do not need a ticket for second-class travel. Check the mobiliteit.lu site for the current rules, including for first-class trains.

### Does a Luxembourg eSIM give me a local phone number?
No. These plans are data only. Calls and messages work through apps such as WhatsApp or FaceTime. If your bank sends codes by SMS, keep your home line on for texts with its data switched off.

### Does the plan work on a day trip to Trier or Metz?
No. Trier is in Germany and Metz is in France, and a Luxembourg plan covers Luxembourg only. A Europe plan may include both, so check its country list on our Europe page before you buy.
