Seychelles — Read the full guide
A Seychelles travel eSIM roams onto Airtel or Cable & Wireless, both of which concentrate their networks on Mahé, Praslin and La Digue where almost everyone lives. Install the profile before you fly, because the airport is small and you clear it fast. Plan around 4G, not 5G, and expect unlimited plans to throttle after a daily allowance.
Before you buy
Mobile coverage in Seychelles concentrates on the three main inhabited islands — Mahé, Praslin and La Digue. Outer islands and the inter-island boat crossings can drop to no service at all, so download maps, boarding passes and booking confirmations before you sail.
Coverage in Seychelles follows the granitic inner islands and stops fairly abruptly beyond them. Airtel and Cable & Wireless both serve Mahé end to end — Victoria, Beau Vallon, Anse Royale and the airport road — along with Praslin around Baie Sainte Anne, Grand Anse and Côte d'Or, and La Digue at La Passe. Outside that triangle the picture changes completely: Bird, Denis, Desroches, Alphonse and the Aldabra group are effectively off-network and depend on hotel or resort satellite links. Treat liveaboard dive boats and yacht charters as offline for the duration.
Terrain matters more here than distance does. Mahé is a granite mountain with a coastline attached, and the Morne Seychellois national park, the cross-island roads over Sans Souci and the steep west-coast bays all have genuine shadowing — you can lose signal a few hundred metres from a beach that had full bars. Praslin's Vallée de Mai forest interior is patchy in the same way. La Digue is small and mostly covered, but you get around by bicycle and ox-cart, so battery life ends up mattering more than signal strength does.
The water is where people get caught out. The Cat Cocos ferry between Mahé and Praslin and the smaller Inter Island Ferry over to La Digue both lose service in the middle of the crossing, which is exactly when travellers want to re-check a transfer time or pull up a booking reference. Download offline maps for all three islands, save your ferry tickets and hotel confirmations as files or screenshots, and do it before you board rather than while you are standing on the jetty at Baie Sainte Anne.
Expect solid 4G on the inhabited islands and do not plan around 5G. That is rarely a constraint, because what travellers actually do here is light: WhatsApp, maps, a handful of booking confirmations. What pushes consumption up is uploading photos and video, which is precisely what Seychelles invites. Resort Wi-Fi is common but frequently slow and sometimes metered per device, so a working eSIM is genuinely useful rather than a backup. Note also that Seychelles sits in no EU or regional roaming zone — a Europe plan will not cover it, and you need a Seychelles or Africa-wide profile.

When you land
Install and test the eSIM at home on your own Wi-Fi before you fly: Seychelles International Airport (SEZ) at Pointe Larue on Mahé is a small airport you clear in minutes, and you will be in a taxi to Victoria or Beau Vallon before you have finished fiddling with settings. On landing, turn off airplane mode, set the eSIM as your mobile data line, and switch Data Roaming ON for it — expect to register on Airtel or Cable & Wireless within a minute or two.

Common questions
- Does an eSIM work in Seychelles?
- Yes. A travel eSIM registers on Airtel Seychelles or Cable & Wireless as a roaming guest, and both cover Mahé, Praslin and La Digue. Your handset needs to be eSIM-capable and carrier-unlocked. Check the unlock before you fly — operators can take a day or more to process the request.
- Will it work on arrival at Seychelles International Airport?
- It should register within a minute or two of leaving airplane mode. SEZ sits at Pointe Larue on Mahé, roughly fifteen minutes from Victoria, and it is small enough that you are through and into a taxi quickly — so having data already live matters more than at a big hub where you have time to fiddle.
- How much data do I need for a week in Seychelles?
- Most travellers use very little: WhatsApp, maps between beaches and a few booking confirmations barely register. The variable is photo and video uploads, which is what everybody does here. Pick a plan sized for the sharing you actually intend to do, and pre-download offline maps for Mahé, Praslin and La Digue.
- Can I use the personal hotspot?
- Tethering works on most Seychelles plans and shares the same allowance, which makes one eSIM workable for a couple with a phone and a laptop. It drains battery quickly, and on La Digue you are cycling all day away from sockets. Carry a power bank if the hotspot is doing real work.
- eSIM or a local Seychelles SIM card?
- For a normal beach or diving holiday the eSIM is simpler: no shop visit in Victoria, no queue, nothing to return. A local Airtel or Cable & Wireless SIM makes sense mainly for long stays, or if you need a Seychellois number for a domestic booking, a charter operator or a local callback.
- Do I need a passport or ID registration?
- Not for a travel eSIM bought before you arrive — it roams onto the local networks rather than creating a Seychellois subscription, so no KYC step applies to you. Buying a local prepaid SIM in Victoria is different and does involve showing your passport at the counter.
- Does it include a Seychelles phone number?
- No. These profiles are data-only, with no local number for calls or SMS. WhatsApp calls work fine and are what most guesthouses and boat operators use anyway, but a verification code sent by SMS will not arrive on this line. Keep your home SIM active for those messages.
