eSIM for Phuket

For a Phuket holiday, a Thailand eSIM is the plan to use, and it also covers the other Thai islands and the mainland. Visits tend to run about a week, so pick a plan valid for at least seven days. Install it at home before flying, then switch it on when you land at Phuket International Airport.

Plans for Thailand cover the whole country, including Phuket.

How much data for 7 days in Phuket

  • Light (maps and messages): about 2 GB
  • Normal (plus social media and browsing): about 4.5 GB
  • Heavy (video and video calls): about 10.5 GB

An estimate from typical use, not a measurement.

Arriving in Phuket

Phuket International Airport (HKT) is in the north of the island, and most visitors land there on a flight from Bangkok or from abroad. There is no train to the island. From the airport you reach the beaches by taxi, pre-booked transfer, minibus or airport bus, and the ride to Patong, Kata or Phuket Town takes a while on a busy day, so it helps to have your hotel address and a map ready.

Phuket is spread over a long island, and arrival is when you most want data: to confirm a transfer, share your location with a driver or message the villa host. Install the eSIM at home on Wi-Fi with the QR code before the flight. When you land, switch the eSIM line on, turn on data roaming for it and keep your home line's mobile data off. If you come by sea from the mainland, the same applies at the pier.

Getting around

Phuket has no metro or tram, so getting around means road transport. Metered taxis exist but many drivers quote a fixed price, so agree it before you get in. Grab operates on the island, which lets you see a fare in advance and pin an exact pickup spot. Many visitors rent a scooter or a car instead, and a phone with a working map and a charged battery is worth more than a printed one.

Songthaews, the open-sided pickup trucks that follow set routes, link Phuket Town with the beaches. Their routes and stops are not on the official apps a city metro would have, so ask a local or your hotel. For the ferries and speedboats to other islands, tickets and times are usually confirmed through the operator or your hotel, often by chat or email.

Where you'll use data

Time on the island is split between the west-coast beaches (Patong, Karon, Kata, Kamala and Surin), the south (Rawai, Nai Harn and Promthep Cape), and Phuket Town, whose old Sino-Portuguese streets and Sunday walking street suit an afternoon. The Big Buddha and Wat Chalong are the usual temple stops. Beach clubs, restaurants and tour operators take bookings by chat, so data is handy even on a quiet beach day.

Day trips from Phuket are mostly by boat: the Phi Phi islands, Phang Nga Bay and James Bond Island, and the beaches around Krabi. These are all part of Thailand, so the Thailand plan stays valid. A boat trip to Malaysia or any other country is different: the Thailand plan does not cover the other country. Download an offline map before heading out on the water, and confirm pickup times the evening before.

Common questions

Will the eSIM work as soon as I land at Phuket airport?
Yes, if you installed it before you left. Switch the eSIM line on, turn on data roaming for it and give it a minute to connect. If it does not, switch airplane mode on and off once.
How much data do I need for a week in Phuket?
About 4.5 GB for normal use: maps, ride apps, messages and some social media. Video calls home, streaming on the sun lounger and photo backups push it nearer 10.5 GB. The plan list on this page shows the estimate next to each plan.
Do I need data to book the island tours and boat trips?
It helps. Many operators confirm times and meeting points by chat, and pickups change with the weather and tides. Having data means you can check a message from a driver without hunting for hotel Wi-Fi.
Does the plan give me a Thai phone number?
No. These plans are data only. Use apps such as WhatsApp or FaceTime for calls, and keep your home line on for texts with its data switched off if your bank sends codes by SMS.
Does the plan cover a trip to Krabi, Phi Phi or Koh Samui?
Yes. Krabi, Phi Phi and Koh Samui are all inside Thailand, and the Thailand plan covers the whole country. A trip to another country, such as Malaysia, is not covered by it.
