eSIM for Istanbul
For Istanbul, a Turkey eSIM covers the whole city and trips elsewhere in the country. Install it at home before you fly. In 2025 Turkey's regulator blocked many eSIM provider websites and apps, so buying or installing once you arrive can fail. A visit usually runs about four days.
Plans for Turkey cover the whole country, including Istanbul.

Arriving in Istanbul
Istanbul Airport (IST) is on the European side, far north of the old centre, and Sabiha Gokcen Airport (SAW) is on the Asian side. The M11 metro line links Istanbul Airport to Gayrettepe, where you change for the rest of the network, and Havaist buses run to Taksim and other districts. From Sabiha Gokcen, the M4 metro line and Havabus buses run into the city. Allow extra time, as both airports are a long way out.
The important rule here is to install before you arrive. In 2025 Turkey's regulator blocked the sites and apps of many eSIM providers. A profile you set up at home keeps working, but buying a new eSIM, scanning a new QR code or topping up from inside Turkey may not load. Scan the QR code on Wi-Fi at home, then on landing switch the eSIM line on, enable data roaming for it, and turn cellular data off on your home SIM.
Getting around
Public transport runs on the Istanbulkart, a rechargeable card used on the metro, trams, Marmaray rail, buses and city ferries. Machines at stations sell and top up the card, and kiosks near the main squares do the same. The Mobiett app from the city bus operator shows routes and live arrivals, and Moovit is another widely used journey planner.
Taxis are everywhere, and BiTaksi orders a licensed taxi through an app. Uber also lists taxis in Istanbul. The ferries across the Bosphorus are both transport and sightseeing, and the tram along the old city is simple to use. Bring your Istanbulkart rather than counting on topping up through an online service, and load a decent balance at a station machine.
Where you'll use data
Most visitors split their time between Sultanahmet, with Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque and Topkapi Palace, and the Beyoglu side, around Galata Tower, Istiklal Avenue, Taksim and Karakoy. The Grand Bazaar and Spice Bazaar, a Bosphorus ferry to Kadikoy or Uskudar on the Asian side, and the neighbourhoods of Balat and Besiktas fill the other days. Maps, translation and booking apps get a lot of use in the bazaars.
Day trips stay inside Turkey, so your Turkey plan keeps working. The Princes' Islands are a ferry ride away, and Bursa, Iznik and Edirne are reachable by road or on the intercity buses. Crossing into Bulgaria or Greece would not be covered by a Turkey plan there. A Europe plan can cover several countries, but check its country list on our Europe page, since regional plans can leave some out, and install it before you arrive in Turkey.

Common questions
- Can I buy an eSIM after I land in Istanbul?
- It may not work. In 2025 Turkey's regulator blocked the websites and apps of many eSIM providers, so buying, installing or topping up from inside the country can fail. Install your eSIM at home, and treat the plan as set and ready before your flight.
- How much data do I need for four days in Istanbul?
- About 2.5 GB for normal use: maps, ride and ferry apps, translation and messages. With heavy video or streaming, count 1.5 GB a day, so about 6 GB for four days. The plan list on this page shows an estimate for each plan.
- Can I pay for the metro with my phone?
- Mostly you pay with the Istanbulkart, which you buy and load at station machines. Check the official city transport pages for any contactless option, as the rules change. The card does not use your data plan.
- Does the plan give me a Turkish phone number?
- No. These plans carry data only. Use WhatsApp or FaceTime for calls, and keep your home line on, with its data off, for SMS codes from your bank.
- Will my plan work at the Princes' Islands or in Bursa?
- Yes. Both are in Turkey, and a Turkey plan covers the whole country. A trip over the border into Bulgaria or Greece is not covered by the Turkey plan there.
